About Poisson Salé

Poisson salé, literally translates to "salted fish" in my Mauritian dialect Créole. It is a stinky dried and salted fish, usually snoek (pronounced sounouk in Créole), very popular in Mauritius, especially in the poorer communities. I ate this quite often as a kid and to this day I absolutely love it. Mauritians have a special fondness for it.

Back in the day, you would buy salted fish at a bazar or the many Chinese grocers found on the island. They would normally be stacked on top of each other in a large basket. These days, you can purchase them nicely packaged at grocery stores as well, which is super convenient but maybe not as nostalgic.

PoissonSalé.com was born out of my desire to have a little Mauritian shop on the internet in the United States where the Mauritian diaspora is much slimmer than that of Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. You can find a Mauritian goods and spice section in select supermarkets in these countries but, quite sadly, not in the United States

It is my pleasure to finally bring you a little Mauritian shop. Its primary goal is to provide you with select ingredients, either popular in Mauritian dishes or hard to find in the United States. So you will not necessarily find products made in Mauritius here as the focus is on helping you re-create meals from our beloved island in your adopted country. Our mission is to fill this shop with goods and spices that remind you of home. Bienvenu(e)!

If this is your first time hearing about Mauritius, or you have been there and our deliciously-spiced food haunts you, a warm welcome to you too! You are at the right place. Thanks for hanging out.

About Me

There is absolutely nothing that I talk about more than FOOD. I am passionate about basically all aspects of it. My college education is in Hospitality and Restaurant Management and I am a Personal Chef and Food Blogger based out of Los Angeles, California.

I care deeply about authenticity, integrity, and well-being and balancing these values with modern food that is oftentimes tainted with additives, preservatives, and highly processed ingredients.

My Food Blogs

I have two food blogs that are a work in progress. As I work on them on the side, and they are mostly for pleasure, I do take some time to add content but know that each recipe and article has been carefully crafted. The recipes are all either passed down from my own family or tried and tested many times by myself for my clients or for my own family.

I have high standards in cooking and quality because I believe food that supports health is important, especially in our present day. My goal is to provide you with content that will delight you on these blogs.
